Princess Picks, but Snubs Eagles

New Season Begins without Eagles
AHS/Popcorn Park’s Prognosticating Princess Begins NFL Season Picks

LACEY TOWNSHIP, NJ – Go back to sleep, Punxatawney Phil. Princess has begun her predictions for the new football season…and her prognosticating prowess is better than any old groundhog.

For her fourth year, Princess the Camel, a longtime resident of Associated Humane Societies Popcorn Park is selecting who she thinks will win key pro football games. This week, Princess says the Texans will defeat the New York Jets. If this year is anything like last year, she’ll probably be correct. Her stats last year were 17 and 4, including her pick for Super Bowl XLIII.

But this year, Princess’s home team selections have whittled down to the Jets and the Giants. Princess will not be picking any Eagles games.

“The Eagles decision to make Michael Vick a part of their team, in spite of his cruel and criminal actions is something we cannot overlook,” said John Bergmann, also Popcorn Park’s General Manager. “For six years, Michael Vick tortured, drowned and killed dogs as part of a horrid blood sport, in the name of money . We are an organization and facility dedicated to protecting and saving abused and neglected animals. We cannot turn a blind eye to what he did.”

Like the Pennsylvania groundhog, Princess has become something of a local legend. Her success in choosing the top teams is inexplicable, and yet pretty reliable. Her name and reputation has made headlines throughout the nation.

So, how does a 2,600-pound Bactrian, with no access to radio, television or the Internet decide who her favorite team is for the week? The answer: Graham crackers.

Early each week, Bergmann writes on his hands the names of two teams competing in a weekend or Monday night game. Princess, whose favorite snack at game time or anytime is graham crackers, makes her game choice by eating the sweet treat from the hand that has the name of her favorite team written on it.

Bergmann then announces Princess’s pick on our website a few days before the game where you can also find a running tally of her wins and losses.

To know Princess and her elegant history, one would never think she would delight in football pools. Princess was once a beloved pet of Doris Duke, who raised Princess and her sister Babe from youngsters. The pair had their own barn, which was like a mansion, and they were taken on summer vacation with Mrs. Duke to her estate in Rhode Island. If the weather became inclement, Princess and Babe were put up in the solarium.

After this devoted animal lover passed away, her camels were still kept on her estate. Babe passed away several years ago, leaving just Princess. Princess's caretaker was about to retire to Connecticut. When it looked like she had nowhere to go, AHS took her in to the Popcorn Park Zoo, where the gentle, friendly camel has happily made her home.

When Princess is not working her football magic, she is enjoying zoo visitors, along with the hundreds of other animals who call Popcorn Park Zoo “home.” You can visit Princess right here and even sponsor her in the Wildlife Club or come down and visit her in person. Popcorn Park Zoo is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located on West Lacey Road, just seven miles from Exit 74 on the Garden State Parkway. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and children under 12.
