Children’s Art Auction to Benefit AHS/Popcorn Park

HOWELL TOWNSHIP, NJ – When patrons and animal lovers peruse the 42 drawings and sketches up for bid at the annual auction, sponsored by Art for the Animals (AFTA), April 3, they will see more than creativity and an eye for design. They will see the works of elementary school students who care just as much about the animals at Associated Humane Societies/Popcorn Park, as they do their crafts.

All proceeds from the second annual art auction, set for 6 p.m., Friday, April 3 at the Freewood Acres Firehouse, East 5th Street, will go to AHS/Popcorn Park.

This auction is like no other. It’s the brainchild of Sara Huguenin, an 8 year-old, who last year decided she wanted to do something good for the community that combined her love of animals and artwork. So, with the help of her parents, her teacher and a bunch of friends and classmates at the Aldrich Elementary School, she formed AFTA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping animals through art.

“I am so proud of Sara and her fellow AFTA members for recognizing this need and using their special talents and love of animals to help out the Societies. And I applaud the parents and teachers who encourage these kids to follow their hearts,” said Roseann Trezza, Associated Humane Societies Executive Director. “Children have so much love and creativity. By helping their community now, they are establishing groundwork that will make them strong caring adults.”

As a special thanks to the group, representatives from Popcorn Park will speak at the auction. Each artist will also receive a free pass to Popcorn Park.

Last year, AFTA raised over $900 for an area animal shelter, said Sara’s mother, Beth. “The children are very excited to see if they will be able to raise more funds this year,” she added.

AFTA is just one of the many schools and children’s groups that contribute each year to Associated Humane Societies/Popcorn Park. To learn how your child or group can make a difference, just take a look under Programs here on the web site!
