Hot Off the Press! Princess Picks the Super Bowl

CONTACT: John Bergmann, Popcorn Park Zoo General Manager
January 28, 2008

LACEY TOWNSHIP, NJ – New York Giants fans, take heart. It seems that Princess the camel is right with you.

How Princess goes about it - she chooses the graham cracker on the hand she believes is the winning team.

The prognosticating camel, the predictor of all things football is defying the bettors and odds makers who say the New England Patriots will win Super Bowl XLII on Sunday. Princess has chosen the New York Giants.

Her selection is not to be sniffed at. During the regular NFL season this year, Princess’s standings were 11 correct predictions and six wrong ones. Her playoff standings were phenomenal, selecting eight out of 10 winning teams. Last week she accurately predicted the Patriots for the championships, but not the Giants.

Princess is a special resident at Associated Humane Societies Popcorn Park Zoo. She doesn’t have a television set or even a radio in her expansive area at the zoo. But, for the past two football seasons she has certainly spawned a love of betting on the games.

Each week throughout the season, assisted by Popcorn Park Zoo General Manager John Bergmann, Princess would “bet” on her favorite team. Bergmann would have the names of two teams playing that weekend written on his hands. Princess, whose favorite snack at gametime or anytime is graham crackers, made her game choice by eating the sweet treat from the hand that has the name of her favorite team written on it.

Her success rivals that of any celebrated sports analyst.

“I can’t explain it, but her predictions, more often than not, are right on the money,” Bergmann said. “I’m hoping she’s right this time, because I’m a Giants fan.”

To know Princess and her elegant history, one would never think she would delight in football pools. Princess was once a beloved pet of Doris Duke, who raised Princess and her sister Babe from youngsters. The pair had their own barn, which was like a mansion, and they were taken on summer vacation with Mrs. Duke to her estate in Rhode Island. If the weather became inclement, Princess and Babe were put up in the solarium.

After this devoted animal lover passed away, her camels were still kept on her estate. Babe passed away several years ago, leaving just Princess. Princess's caretaker was about to retire to Connecticut. When it looked like she had nowhere to go, AHS took her in to the Popcorn Park Zoo, where the gentle, friendly camel has happily made her home.

Princess is just one of hundreds of animals who now call Popcorn Park Zoo “home.” Popcorn Park Zoo was established in 1977 for the sole purpose of providing a refuge for wildlife, exotic and domestic animals that are sick, elderly, abandoned, abused, or injured. The federally licensed zoo houses more than 200 of these animals and birds in spacious surroundings on seven acres in the heart of the scenic Pine Barrens.

For those who would rather visit Princess than watch the game on Super Bowl Sunday, Popcorn Park Zoo is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located on West Lacey Road, just seven miles from Exit 74 on the Garden State Parkway. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and children under 12.

Also on the premises is the Associated Humane Societies animal shelter with dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and smaller animals like rabbits, hamsters and ferrets all ready for adoption to good caring homes.
