National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week

Cagney used to visit patients in cancer care centers with her owner. Tragically, her owner suffered with cancer and asked if we would take in Cagney. This lovely long-haired lass resides at Kitty City -- a unique free-roaming cat area at the Forked River facility -- complete with free-flowing water receptacles for the cats, "hidden" kitty litter boxes, cat trees, furniture, television, an aquarium, skylights, and escape-proof fencing if they want to go outdoors.

November 5-11th is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week

This is that time of year when shelters across the country are honored for their efforts -- and that of their dedicated staff. The Associated Humane Societies is an "Open Door" shelter -- meaning we try to never turn an animal away. The Society's four Animal Care Centers and Popcorn Park Zoo receive an increasing number of unwanted pets and exotics that are turned away by "no kill" shelters, rescues and pounds. If the AHS did not accept them, many of these unwanted animals would be become abandoned strays, unable to fend for themselves.

Many of these animals come in sick, injured, starving, abused such as those pictured in the HUMANE NEWS.  We make a difference in their lives -doing what we do best!

And we make a difference in the important services we provide to our community. We rescue stray dogs and cats, investigate animal cruelty, assist the public, help families find a new companion, rescue sick, injured and unwanted animals and give a safe haven to them.

If you would like to help us celebrate, please spread the word about the importance of spaying/neutering. The Society can use many much-needed items - fruits and vegetables for the many types of animals at our various facilities, bird seed, guinea pig chow, ferret chow,

Please visit for a self-guided tour of any of the Society's facilities. If you bring your pet during Nov. 6th through the 11th, we will give a free nail clipping. However, pets cannot be allowed in the kennels, catteries or Popcorn Park so they can be brought back to your car until after you have visited our facilities.

The Society is open from noon until 4:30 p.m. 7 days a week. The Union shelter is closed on Wednesdays.
