Disaster Preparedness for Pets

September has been designated as National Disaster Preparedness Month. The Associated Humane Societies sent several staff members to Disaster Planning meetings over the past two years. Most recently, Society staffers were invited to the American Red Cross in Fairfield, N J to meet with many others for emergency preparedness planning. In addition to the Red Cross, also presenting important information was FEMA, the National Weather Service and the N J State Police. FEMA already has new policies in place, new personnel and even have Emergency Management Specialists & Pet Preparedness Project Officer.

Emergencies can arive in the way of a fire in your home, hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, etc. and many agencies have important information that you can refer to but pet owners should be especially vigilant and have plans in place.

1. Keep carriers, leashes by your door in the event you must evacuate with your pets.
2. Have your animals microchipped, wear license and/or i.d. tags.
3. Designate two meeting places for you, your children, relatives in the event you must leave your home or workplace.
4. Keep an updated emergency supply kit for you and your pets.

The U. S. Dept. of Homeland Security has 30 tips for Emergency Preparedness. Many other agencies have information to assist and educate. Included in the tips are what to include in emergency supply kits.

You can download a great brochure on pet preparedness that DHS issued this past June from
