Nyla the Lioness Joins Popcorn Park

Underfed and neglected, Nyla originally came from Jungle Eyes refuge in Texas; other big cats were reported to be neglected there as well. Why did they want to get rid of Nyla? Jungle Eyes had posted a request for rescue of some of the big cats due to Hurricane Rita.  However, it's believed the co-chairman of the rescue, involved in a shooting in June, had concerns that someone might return to kill him and all the animals. Although not a healthy cat, Nyla was a lucky one when she was taken in by In-Sync Exotics of Wylie, Texas.

Nyla immediately won the hearts of staff ... though Nyla was only with them a few weeks, they missed the thin lioness the moment she left for Popcorn Park. Nyla couldn't stay at In-Sync because she had been declawed. With no claws, she was defenseless and couldn't be with other big cats. And with no future at this sanctuary, Nyla had nowhere to go. But Vicky Keahy, manager of In-Sync, contacted us, hoping this sweetheart of a girl might find a permanent home. We immediately said `yes'.

Nyla is about 8 years old and very lean. At Jungle Eyes she was deprived of calcium and vitamins due to her being fed a strict diet of chicken. One of her first steps toward recovery at Popcorn Park is eating a truly balanced diet. Once her weight is up, and her health improved, Nyla will be tranquilized and undergo a complete examination to determine the true state of her health.

Since her arrival Nyla has enjoyed sunning herself on her resting table and in the grass, where she can be seen stretching out with her first indestructible toy ... a sturdy plastic coffee can. She holds on to her toy like a child with a first teddy. She has settled in surprisingly quickly, and seems to know that Popcorn Park is now her very own forever home. She enjoys being spoken to by staff, knowing they care.

Keahey who drove Nyla up from Texas in a special panel truck with a cage inside, wept as she prepared for her return trip, leaving Nyla behind. "I got so attached to her", she said. "I know theyll take good care of her."  And we will - Nyla's safe with us now ... and always.

You can help take care of Nyla, too, by sponsoring our lovely lioness on the Wildlife Club.  She's the kind of girl who's grateful for new friends, AND you can see how beautifully she has blossomed since her first arrival!!
