Highly Contagious Canine Flu Spreading Across U.S.

A highly contagious canine flu has been detected in 7 states and surfaced in kennels and dog tracks across the country. The deadly dsease has killed racing greyhounds and has affected horses. It has been found in the New York suburbs, and can be passed on the street, in dog runs or even through humans transferring it from one dog to another. Kennel workers have carried it home with them. Although it can be mistaken for kennel cough, this flu may spike fevers, and dogs may have runny noses. Antibiotics and fluids can cut the pneumonia fatality rate. The flu has killed greyhounds at tracks in Florida, Massachusetts, Arizona, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Texas and Iowa. In Chestnut Ridge, New York, a boarding kennel was vacated for decontamination on Sept. 17th. A kennel in Ossining had to close for 3 weeks to disinfect.
