Dallas Found Near Death - Recover Looks Promising

Thoughts of sadness and disgust fill our minds when we think of what this poor dog went through, thanks to a heartless and cruel individual who was supposed to be, "caring for him". How could he let this happen? How could he look at this dog, who was slowly dying of starvation, and not feed him? How do you live with yourself?? The individual responsible for this will never give us those answers but thankfully, the victim of his neglectful ways is now safe and cared for.

This 1 1/2 year old pit bull mix, Dallas, was left in the care of a Linden resident by his owner who could no longer care for him. The caretaker had cats in the apartment that didn't get along with Dallas, so Dallas was placed in a carrier, in the unheated hallway of an apartment building, to stay until he starved to death. It was a solitary and lonely life, living in a small, cramped carrier in the darkened hallway all alone. We don't know how long Dallas was left in the carrier. It could have been days, weeks, or even more than a month, but it takes starving for quite a while to get in the condition that Dallas is in today.

Our AHS Newark facility received the call to go out and rescue the emaciated dog after finally, a neighbor spoke up for the him. When the ACO arrived on the scene, Dallas was lethargic and weak, and the caretaker's only response was that he, "feeds him every other day". Obviously, charges are being filed against this individual.

AHS Newark officer, John, rushed Dallas to Animal Emergency & Referral Associates in Fairfield for immediate medical care. The veterinarian gave the dehydrated and emaciated pup fluids and ran several tests, and also gave Dallas a much-needed warm bath. His skin began breaking down from starvation, so Dallas has many sores all over his bony body. He had a very low body temperature and the veterinarian assured us that he literally was saved just in time.....he would have died any day now if he had not been saved when he had. Amazingly enough, many of his initial test results came back good, which is a great sign that he will make a full recovery.

Dallas is staying in the hospital for a few days to get a little stronger, then he will be transported to our AHS Tinton Falls facility to continue on with his recovery. These types of cases are ones that are seen more often than you can imagine by our AHS Newark Animal Control Officers, and they never hesitate to get the animal the immediate medical care that is needed. This does not come without a price, so please consider making a donation to our ResQ Fund by texting ResQ to 501501 to make a $10.00 donation, or by clicking here.

The incredibly sweet and grateful Dallas weighs just 23 pounds (the 10.34 you see on the scale is in kilograms) so he has quite a way to go to get strong and healthy again. Please offer him your support and good wishes. We will update again soon on our new friend, Dallas. We will make a difference in the life of Dallas -- for that is what we do best~!

Check out Dallas' first update and see how much progress he's made!
