The sad stories of animal abuse and neglect never pauses, not even for the holidays. At least we can take comfort in knowing that this holiday season, these puppies and their parents will be safe and cared for, instead of facing a fate worse than death.
Our AHS Newark facility received the call from an Irvington, NJ, city Animal Control Officer just before Thanksgiving concerning a pit bull family that needed urgent help. The ACO, Alex, knew the story of this family of dogs, and knew what would become of them if he didn't get them to safety. Their owner was evicted from his residence but left the dogs behind in the basement in horrible conditions. Feces and garbage were everywhere, and there was no food or water to be found. To make matters worse, much worse, the owner was seen on several occasions, trying to sell the puppies on a street corner in the city. The ACO went after the man but with every attempt, the man took off running. Sadly, he succeeded in selling some of the puppies before the ACO could actually catch him. We hope that some of those puppies made it into good homes, but shudder to think of what could become of them.
The ACO did not give up and was finally able to get the dogs to the safety of our AHS Newark facility. The mother, father, and three puppies received good meals and medical care at AHS Newark and after a few days, were transferred to AHS/Popcorn Park to continue with their recovery.
The dogs are all quite happy to be safe, warm, fed and taken care of. All five dogs are underweight and have some minor medical issues which we are currently treating, but once they are all well, they will be made available for adoption to good families that can give them the wonderful lives that they deserve. If you would like to contribute toward their care, please text ResQ to 501501 to make a $10.00 donation or click here to donate to our ResQ Fund.
In this video, you'll see the three puppies, Toozer, Pipper and Bunker, getting all cleaned up and having some fun after their spa days. We will update again soon on the pups and on Mom and Dad as well in the coming days. Thanks so much for your support, which enables us to help animals in need, like this little family.
