Spirit came to us a little over two weeks ago now and honestly, we are amazed daily by her strength and resilience. The day that Spirit came in, we looked at the depressed, defeated, old girl and wondered how she even survived for as long as she had. She could not walk, she was extremely weak, dehydrated and neglected, and she looked as if she had just about given up. Although we did not name her, Spirit's name is very fitting since she has the spirit of a warrior and has shown that she is far from ready to give up.
Spirit had a decent life for many years with her elderly owner, but when he had to go into an assisted living facility and the care of Spirit was left up to his son, that is when Spirit's life fell apart. She received no care and worse yet, she was abandoned completely when the son moved to another state and left Spirit alone. Thankfully, a neighbor stepped in and cared for Spirit, then brought her to us. Since that day, we have been doing everything in our power to help Spirit put that sad experience behind her.
Spirit has been staying in our Vinnie Van Gogh Recovery Suite where she spends her days resting, relaxing, and spending time with her many new friends. Spirit was infested with fleas and tapeworms when she arrived. That has all been resolved. She had infections of the eyes, ears and skin. We are treating all of that, as well as treating her for pain from some age-related arthritis. We have run some tests on Spirit to be sure that there are no underlying conditions that need medical attention but in the meantime, she is doing beautifully. She has a very good appetite, she enjoys long walks throughout the day, and she absolutely loves getting attention and just soaks it up. Finally, life is good for Spirit!
Spirit was unable to walk when she arrived. She was exhausted, starving, suffering with eye and ear infections, and chewed up badly by flea infestation. After spending some time in our medical department getting vaccinations, flea treatment, medicine for her infections and pain medication, and having her nails cut, Spirit had a good meal and took a long, well deserved nap on a huge bed in our Vinnie Van Gogh Recovery Suite. Now all we have to do is help her to recover, and hope for a bright future for her.
We hope to be able to begin the search for a new home for Spirit shortly but while we are conducting some more tests and treating her medical conditions, if you would like to help with the care of Spirit, please text ResQ to 501501 to make a $10.00 donation or you can click here to donate to our ResQ Fund.
You can also send Spirit a blanket, some canned food, or other items that we use to care for her and the many other animals like her that are in our care by going to our Amazon Wish List here.
