Maxx - Suffered from Severe Head Wound and More

Heartbreaking ... horrific ... sad. These and many other words come to mind when you see pictures like this. Pictures of an innocent animal that was made to suffer and endure unspeakable pain thanks to the heartless individual that had control over this defenseless creature.

Anger .. revenge .... hatred. Those are the words that express how you feel when you think about such an individual, an individual that looks at a dog like a piece of trash, like something that has no thoughts or feelings, or that does not experience pain or sadness. We feel all of those things too, but the words that come to our mind are healing . recovery .. and home. That is what we hope for animals such as Maxx, the latest victim of abuse that has come to us for help.

Our Associated Humane Societies Newark branch received the after hours call from the Newark police late one night to respond to an injured dog found at a Newark residence. When our ACO, Tom, arrived on the scene, he was horrified at the sight of Maxx, a young pit bull mix. The police explained that Maxx was found at the vacant residence, bleeding, struggling and suffering. He had a severe wound to the head and various injuries to the front of his chest and leg. Tom wasted no time in scooping up this poor, mangled dog, and rushed him straight to Animal Emergency & Referral Associates in Fairfield, NJ for emergency medical care.

Maxx underwent a thorough examination and had his horrendous wounds cleaned and sutured. He was made very comfortable and was provided with antibiotics and pain meds to ease his dreadful pain. Through it all, Maxx just couldn't be any nicer or more grateful for getting the help that he desperately needed. After a short stay in the hospital, Maxx was transferred back to AHS Newark where he has taken up residence in the medical department, getting pampered and having all of his needs tended to. Although the head wound is severe, we are very hopeful that with continued medical treatment and lots of rest, relaxation, and good care, that Maxx will make a full recovery. On Monday, he will have his sutures removed and we will have a better idea of his long term prognosis.

All of the thoughts that go through your minds when you see something like this, we feel them all, too. We want justice for Maxx, we want his abuser to be found and see him thrown in jail, but unfortunately, the perpetrators are rarely found and when they are, the punishment never, ever fits the crime. In the meantime, we will continue to treat every animal that comes to us in this condition with good care, love and respect, and give them every chance possible at a fresh start in life. Please help us continue to do that by supporting our Res-Q Fund, which is what enables us to treat dogs like Maxx, and make a donation.

Thank you for your support and we will update again soon on our new friend, Maxx.

For more information on Maxx, can call AHS at 973-824-7080 or e-mail and refer to File 20175.
