The Bulldog/Pit Bull mixture was so exhausted and physically depleted that he collapsed and laid down in a Carteret residence driveway. The condition of his body was so badly mutilated, both of his front legs had gaping wounds and sores to his head.
The Associated Humane Societies was contacted on Sunday evening to rescue the pathetic dog who was immediately taken to the Animal Referral & Emergency Hospital in Fairfield. He was a heartwrenching mess that we thought to be the victim to be used as bait in dogfighting.
The veterinary staff fell in love with this guy they now call "Harvey" and that dogfighting was not the case. It appears that this was an irresponsible owner who had not taken care of the veterinary needs of Harvey. He obviously has some type of allergies that were not addressed. Whatever the cause, the symptoms had caused him to chewing at his legs and self-mutilation. Thanks to our Res-Q Fund your donations help u to help Harvey and the hundreds of animals that come through our doors each month.
Harvey is estimated to be about 3-5 y ears old and is being treated for allergic dermatitis with secondary self-mutilation or possibly, but less likely, a fungal infection. But that is not all that Harvey is suffering from!
He is going to require soft palate surgery and orthopedic consultations for his right rear leg and hips.
Our thanks to our viewers for helping us with Harvey! For information, call 973-824-7080, Ext. 101 or e-mail us.
