Cherry and Dottie - 2 Strays Cruelly Maced

Back in November, our AHS- Newark animal control officer received the call to retrieve two female pit bulls from the firehouse in Plainfield, NJ. The poor girls were picked up after being maced in the face by some malicious person. The girls were brought in to our Newark facility where they were all cleaned up and made comfortable, and they were just as sweet as can be.

Dottie, a 2 year old, and Cherry, a 6 year old, were under medical care for a few weeks for upper respiratory infections. Cherry needed corrective surgery on her eyes, which our veterinarian performed, and was recuperating nicely and Dottie was ready to begin her search for a new home real soon. But the kennel staff got a real surprise one morning when they came in and discovered that Dottie had been keeping a little secret. She was a mom! Dottie gave birth to only two puppies and sadly, one of them passed away immediately but the other was happy, healthy, and spunky, and the prognosis was looking great for mom and new pup, Melody.

They moved up to the puppy palace where mom could take care of her only baby in peace and comfort but the staff quickly discovered that Dottie just wouldn't nurse the little puppy. They began feeding her but couldn't figure out why Dottie was refusing to nurse. Then they remembered Dottie came in with another dog, Cherry. Maybe a visit from Cherry would help?

They brought Cherry up to see Dottie and the girls were thrilled to see each other! And guess what? Dottie began nursing Melody immediately! Perhaps she just needed a little coaxing from "Grandma"! So, Cherry, Dottie, and Melody are all having a great time as a happy little family in the puppy suite and soon, all three will be looking for looking for great homes. It's quite obvious that Dottie and Cherry have a real bond so they'll need a home where they can stay together forever.

Stay tuned for more from the happy multi-generational family! Please consider making a donation toward their care by giving to our Res-Q Fund, or you can text HumaneHelp to 41444 to make a donation.

If you would like more information on them when they become available in a few weeks, please contact our AHS Newark facility.
