Max the Guard Dog - Update 1/31

It's been about three weeks now since Max arrived, and we are just delighted to have this absolute gentleman with us. You may remember the sad story of Max, whom our AHS- Newark officer discovered one cold and snowy day, freezing and suffering in an industrial lot that he was supposed to be guarding in the city of Newark. Our officer described Max as being, "the guard dog that gave up". Since Max had no water or adequate shelter and was most definitely in distress, our officer removed the poor old boy and brought him to the safety of our facility in Newark. Sadly, the next day when his owner came to claim him, telling tales of a beautiful new dog house for Max, we had to follow the NJ law and return him to the owner. We're happy to say though, his story didn't end there.

Our ACO didn't give up on Max and returned to that lot to check up on him later in the week. The "beautiful new dog house" wasn't beautiful at all, and didn't provide Max any shelter from the harsh elements. This time, he was able to convince Max's owner to give him up for good so that for once in his life, Max could experience warmth, safety, and good care, like he deserves.

Max was transferred down to us at AHS/Popcorn Park and although he was very weak and sickly when he arrived, he is getting stronger and healthier every single day. Max could hardly hold up his own tail just a couple of weeks ago. That is no longer the case at all. Max swishes his tail from side to side as soon as he sees a friend coming to take him for a walk, and he strolls along happily, checking out his surroundings, and stopping every so often for some attention.

Although his legs and hips are not the strongest, he trots around our exercise yard like a pup on a mission! Max positively loves getting attention and we are amazed by the fact that the poor treatment that he received from humans throughout his life in no way impacted how he feels about people. Max just melts when you give him some attention. Just scratch him behind the ears and he stops whatever he's doing, sits down beside you, and just eats it up. It is as if he wants to make up for all of the attention that he didn't receive over the years.

Max is still struggling to overcome a terrible upper respiratory infection but we are hopeful that in a couple of weeks, he will make a full recovery. We can't thank you all enough for helping us to provide all of the medical care necessary to give Max a fresh start. We rely heavily on the support of caring and compassionate people like you who, like us, feel that Max and all the others like him are truly deserving of another chance in life. To make a donation toward his care, please contribute to our Res-Q Fund or text HumaneHelp to 41444

Thank you for your support of our darling boy Max, and we will update again soon on his progress.
