Franky - Abandoned with Shoelace Tied and Embedded in His Neck

It seems that every day, another animal is a victim of some awful abuse, some cruelty or neglect. What is going on with our treatment of the creatures that share this earth with us? When will we start treating them with kindness and respect? If that day is coming, it didn't come soon enough for Franky.

A Newark resident spotted this terrified terrier wandering around the street one night in obvious distress. She tried to get the injured dog to come to her but he was just too frightened. He wouldn't go to her, but he wouldn't go too far either. After several attempts to get him in, she finally decided that at least if she couldn't get him, she would put a blanket out for him so hopefully he would rest his weary body on it when he tired of hiding in the shadows.

The next morning, the woman found the distressed dog sleeping on the blanket. She called our AHS- Newark facility who immediately dispatched an officer to the scene. The ACO was able to get this poor soul into the van and brought him straight to the medical department, as it was obvious that he was suffering with injuries.

>Aside from being dirty, matted, and hungry, poor Franky had so many other things going on. First and foremost was the deeply embedded shoelace that was hanging from his neck. Someone, for some god awful reason, decided to tie a shoe lace around Franky's neck at some point in his life. The problem was, they never took it off. It had cut down deeply into his neck and caused a terribly infected wound. After very carefully removing the unwanted object from Franky's neck and cleaning and treating the wound, the veterinarian began examining the rest of the poor pup's body. Poor Franky had bites and abrasions on his stomach, back and sides. It's difficult to determine what exactly happened to Franky but it was clear that he got to us just in time. Without medical treatment, this poor pup's body would have been riddled with infection.

Even in the dreadful condition he was in, Franky was clearly grateful to finally be getting the help that he so desperately needed. Although he is shy and still a bit reserved, he is so very, very sweet. His caretakers are already in love with this loving, well behaved little guy. He has had training at some point in his life as is evident by the way he sits so politely when asked and is so well mannered. Franky is on a variety of medications including antibiotics and pain medication, and he is resting very comfortably in the medical department where he is getting lots of love and attention from the staff. We are very much looking forward to the day when Franky is all healed up and ready to start his life over again with a loving family that will never let any harm come to him again.

As you may have noticed, pets such as Franky have been coming through the AHS doors every single day lately. As we said earlier, we don't know what is going on with people but can only hope that soon they will get a conscience, and begin keeping their pets safe and treating them as members of their family, not just objects that can be tossed away. Franky is one of many that has come to us in desperate need of help and we turn no one away.

The help that we provide does not come without a cost and if you can, please make a donation to our Res-Q Fund - it would be greatly appreciated. Or you can text HumaneHelp to 41444.

Franky is making amazing strides in his recovery and will be ready for adoption shortly. Thank you, as always, for your support in the work that we do saving animals like Franky.

p.s. Franky has been moved to our Tinton Falls facility; please check our update above.
