What a sad life Bella and Stella must have led to be in the condition that they are in now. One would think that suffering this kind of neglect, they may not want much to do with humans, but that is definitely not the case with these sweet girls. They just can't seem to get enough attention.
Bella is a 6 year old German Shepherd and Stella is an 8 year old St. Bernard. The girls were turned in to our Newark facility by their owner who said that the landlord would no longer allow the dogs. Well, thank goodness for that landlord and it's a shame that the girls were not turned in years ago. Both dogs were extremely neglected and in desperate need of help. They were transferred to us at AHS- Lacey where they will begin their trip down the road to recovery.
We were just shocked at the condition of Stella when she arrived. This beautiful and super sweet girl has an absolutely atrocious skin infection that has caused a lot of her hair to fall out, has infected ears and eyes, and is easily 40 pounds underweight. It was first thought that she may have entropion in both eyes but since she is suffering with pneumonia, we will have to wait until her condition improves before she can go see a specialist for further evaluation. In the meantime, she is on the spa day schedule, receiving medicated baths every other day along with a long list of medications.
Bella's emaciated and neglected appearance was equally as shocking. Weighing just 46 pounds, Bella has missed many a good meal in her day. Those days are just a bad memory now as we work to get her weight to where it should be. Although Bella is a pure white shepherd, it took a very long spa day and several baths to get her close to being white again. She has sores and calluses on her legs and flea dirt all over from what appears to be a prior very heavy flea infestation.
Even in their condition, these two lovely ladies just couldn't be any sweeter. They both whine and stand on their hind legs to hug you and get some attention, and bathing them can be a little difficult as all they want to do is kiss you and shake paws with you. Just goes to show you the unbreakable spirit and resilience of these two beautiful dogs. They are far from ready for adoption as they will both be under medical care for several weeks and Stella may also require surgery for the condition with her eyes.
We are once again relying on the kindness of others to contribute to our Res-Q Fund, which is the fund that enables us to treat the special needs cases like Bella and Stella. Please make a donation to help these two sweet girls or text HumaneHelp to 41444.
Thank you, as always, for your support and please stay tuned for more from our lovely ladies, Bella and Stella.
