We received a call about some just hatched turkeys that fell into a storm drain through the openings in the drain cover. The hen turkey had been sitting on a nest in the woods close to the storm drain and across the street from the small farm that owned her.
When her brood hatched she started walking them back to the farm, but the little ones walked over the drain cover and fell through the openings. Mom waited and watched with the one chick who was smart enough not to walk over the holes.
Barnegat Public Works came right out with equipment to left the drain cover and with the help of Mayor John Novak the cover was lifted and the 4 chicks rescued and put safely into a carrier.
We caught mom and brought her and her chicks back to the safety of the farm.
Once we put mom in a holding pen she couldn't escape from, we released her chicks in with her, all were happy to be together again.
