The planning and preparation began in early March. Emails were sent back and forth, a date was picked, ID badges were sent out along with brochures and Humane News, and volunteers made arrangements to bring adoptable dogs to Petco of Middletown and PetSmart of Holmdel. Finally, the finishing touches were put place for the annual Roughnecks Day at Popcorn Park.
Since then, every weekend, through good and bad weather, the Roughnecks were manning their posts and collecting donations for Popcorn Park. Finally on June 4th, as we sat in the picnic area waiting, you heard the roar of the engines as the Roughnecks started down Humane Way.
A trailer filled to the brim and a pickup truck bed also filled followed them down Humane Way. Handshakes and hugs were exchanged and it was back to the donation shed to unload the bounty.
We have no idea how all of those donations fit in the trailer! They just kept coming. With their collected items, the Roughnecks filled our donation sheds from top to bottom. We will be able to go a very long time without having to buy any food. In addition to the donations of cat and dog food, linens, cleaning supplies and numerous other needed contributions, they collected over $5,000!!! That very generous donation will greatly help our mission.
After unloading, we all came back to the picnic area and other Roughneck members already had the barbeque up and running and were grilling hot dogs and burgers for the club, family members and any Popcorn Park visitors who were hungry. Members and their families walked through the zoo and enjoyed their tours. The weather was great for another Roughneck Family Day at the Park.
The Roughneck Family Day has, and always will be, one of THE best days of the year. We say this not only because of the amount of donations the animals receive, but for the opportunity to be in the company of such a compassionate group. We are forever grateful for the continued support of these remarkable men and to all of you who have donated to them on our behalf.
