Underneath all of this mangled and matted fur is a loving, sweet, gentle soul that is dreaming of a better life. A life where she will be cared for instead of neglected ….. a life where she will be cherished instead of used and abused ….. a life where she is part of a family and not a commodity for a greedy individual that tosses her out like old trash when he has made enough money on her.
The beautiful soul beneath this neglected body is Patty, a Tibetan Mastiff that is only 3 years old and has already seen enough sorrow and despair in her young life to last a lifetime. We are hopeful that now that Patty is safe and cared for, her sad and lonely days will be put behind her quickly, and there will only be happiness in her future from now on.
We recently received a request from Tibetan Mastiff Rescue to help with another poor dog that was dumped and in desperate need of help. As you know, we took in our lovable lug Leo, a one year old Tibetan Mastiff, from this good rescue a couple of months ago after he lived a similarly harsh life. (If you don't know Leo's story, you can read it here. Patty was found in an area of New York after she was dumped by an individual that was most likely using her for breeding. The rescue has found 16 of these dogs in the area in the last year and are working with authorities to apprehend this cruel person that is imposing such needless pain and suffering on these beautiful and regal dogs. A kind and compassionate volunteer with the rescue, Bob, made the long trip out to New York to pick up Patty and bring her to us. Even Bob was shocked at the state that poor Patty was in, and happy that she would now be getting help for probably the first time in her life.
Aside from the obvious neglect that Patty has suffered with her coat being thick and heavy with mats and dirt, Patty has also had multiple litters of puppies. She has several broken and diseased teeth, she has some conditions with her eyes that are causing her infection and discomfort, and she also has a skin infection. Patty was very sensitive around the area of her neck when she first arrived and would not allow us to touch it but now that she has gotten to know us, we have been able to investigate with no problem. She may have had something embedded in her neck at some point but it is difficult to determine, as her heavily matted fur is tough to get through. Patty also has severe scarring around her muzzle, which indicates that her mouth was kept tightly closed for extended periods of time. Patty is much like her distant relative Leo in that she is quite a project to undertake. But also like Leo, Patty is absolutely worth the effort.
It never ceases to amaze us how a dog could be in such a sad state and suffered so much neglect, yet still has such a love of life and everyone in it. We see it every day with Leo and now, we see it with Patty too. Instead of hanging her head and dwelling on her sad state of affairs, Patty holds her head high, wags her big tail, and runs and plays like a puppy. She is making friends every day and realizing more and more that her terrible past is long behind her. Obviously Patty will need extensive grooming, medical treatment, and probably surgery and again, we ask that you help us to help another deserving animal in need by contributing to our Res-Q Fund which is in dire need of additional funds.
Patty has a long road ahead of her and her healing has only just begun so obviously, she is not available for adoption at this time. We will update again soon on the progress of Patty and we thank you for your continued support.
