3 Abandoned Dogs Tied Outside with No Shelter

Celebrating the New Year should have been a quiet time of reflection and resolve for the coming year. Not so at the AHS Newark shelter where over 26 dogs arrived within the first few days of the year.

One of the first shelter arrivals of the New Year came as a result of an urgent plea which appeared on a Facebook page. It referred to an "abandoned or abused dog tied to a tree in Newark for the last 48 hours, tangled in the leash". The writer advised that they "called several agencies and no one came". When the AHS became aware of the troublesome allegation, our Animal Control Officer was dispatched to the scene. Officers from the Newark Police Dept. were already on the scene.

The situation was much more heartwrenching than originally noted on the Facebook page. There were 3 dogs tied outside -- a female and two males -- much too thin to withstand the elements with little or no shelter. After further investigation, a resident advised that they weren't his dogs... he just fed them. Due to the conversation with the AHS ACO and the Police, the owner was advised by the Newark Police that the AHS would take possession of the 3 outside dogs. As the ACO put the dogs into the ambulance, neighbors were cheering for the rescued dogs! Had the outside dogs been left undiscovered, it is doubtful they would have survived the cold snap.

We discovered that there was a female pit bull with nursing pups inside the house. The residence had no heat & kept the stoves on high. They also had a baby and the Newark Police contacted DYFS.

The trio, named Chloe, Cody and Charlie, were given all necessary inoculations, dewormed and will be altered before they leave to new homes. The displaced dogs are less than a year old are now warm in kennels, with proper nutrition and waiting for a new life. It is only through the generosity of animal lovers like you that we can continue to have an open door policy for the hundreds of animals that come through our doors each month. Please donate and help us help them.

The three pit bulls at the AHS in Newark are sweet, hungry for love and waiting to start a new life now that they are no longer confined to a spartan lifestyle. We have named them Chloe (File# 141038-F) featured on top, Cody (File# 141039-M) in the middle, and Charlie (File 141949-M) at left.

To see these and the more than 150 dogs waiting for adoption, please feel free to visit the Associated Humane Societies at 124 Evergreen Ave. in Newark, just off of Frelinghuysen Ave., near the Elizabeth line. AHS is convenient to Rt. 1 and 9, NJ Turnpike, Route 22 and Garden State Parkway. The AHS is open 7 days a week for your convenience.

For information on these dogs, call the AHS at 973-824-7080 or e-mail us.
