Update on Mikey - Oct. 3, 2015

It's been a long time since we've seen a dog come in as sad as Mikey. This poor lab was absolutely heartbroken when his owner abandoned him at a veterinary hospital about a week ago in New York and it showed. Read his original story. When Popcorn Park friend Christina Sciarrillo brought him to us just a week ago, we knew we would have our work cut out for us.

Not only did Mikey's body need some serious healing but his broken heart did too. We immediately began treating Mikey's many physical ailments and have seen huge improvement already but we thought it would take a long, long time for Mikey's sadness to heal and disappear .

Well, we thought wrong. With LOTS of encouragement, extra attention, and TLC from our staff, Mikey had his big breakthrough! He slowly began with little things like perking up when it was time for a walk or bath instead of shrinking into the corner and hiding, wagging his tail a bit when being talked to instead of hanging his head and being despondent, and getting curious and happy with checking out his new surroundings instead of just trudging along.

First he started coming to the staff for some attention when called, then he started checking out toys. Finally, he let loose!! He picked the rainiest day of the week to run around like a loon and splash in the mud but hey, whatever makes him happy! Mikey is still a little shy, a little down, but certainly on his road to recovery both physically and mentally. We're just thrilled with his progress and hope that in a few weeks, Mikey will be cured and ready to start meeting potential adopters that can offer him the fabulous, loving home that he deserves.

Thank you all for caring so much about our newest resident in need, Mikey, and thank you to those of you that have contributed to our Res-Q Fund toward Mikey's care. Our Res-Q Fund is constantly being depleted by the many special needs cases that continue to come in so please, if you can, make a donation to our Res-Q Fund. We will continue to update on Mikey's progress so please, keep checking in!
