We call him Mikey. He had an owner who could probably not afford medical care for their Labrador …. nor the expense to euthanize. There weren't too many options. If their pet was brought to the ACC on Staten Island, the Lab would have gone through an impersonal intake and then the death knell.
He was left abandoned at an animal hospital in Staten Island and the staff was searching for a foster but failing that, it would have been to the ACC. A veterinary tech reached out to a friend, Christine Sciarrillo, who had adopted a dog from Popcorn Park. Christine contacted us about Mikey and after seeing his sad picture, we told her to bring Mikey to us as the dog, estimated to be about 5 years old, needed help to get on the road to recovery.
Mikey arrived and just broke our hearts as soon as we met him. This big teddy bear of a dog is so incredibly sad and confused.....we can't imagine what's going through his mind. Mikey went straight to our medical department where he was updated on all of his vaccines, samples were taken of his skin to check for a variety of skin conditions, and lots of medications were dispensed to begin his treatment. In addition to yeast infections of his skin, eyes and ears, he also has severe pododermititis on his feet which have caused them to be swollen, inflamed and very painful.
Mikey's floor will be completely covered in soft, comfortable blankets to help ease the pain in his feet, and he has already began his regimen of medications. He will also have medicated baths every other day to get his skin to heal. If he had not been treated, it was only a matter of time before he would have been unable to walk.
He already seems to be feeling a bit better after getting his first long, warm, medicated bath, and resting on his comfy blankets. We are hoping to see a tail wag from him soon, and will try our best to help Mikey to put his past behind him and focus on a bright new future. We are so thankful to our friend Christina Sciarrillo for stepping in to help Mikey. We are also so thankful to our many supporters who contribute to our Res-Q Fund because without it, we would not be able to help pets in need like Mikey.
