They may be a bit of an odd couple, but this is one couple that truly loves each other. Sunny and Sheldon are a pair of pups that came from a neglectful home and are hoping to one day, get a family that will care about them and provide them with the loving, safe home that they deserve.
They were found on the run together in Upper Freehold, and would not leave each other's side. An animal control agency for Western Monmouth County brought them to Popcorn Park for the required stray hold. An anonymous phone call advised us that this was not the first time that Sunny and Sheldon were found running loose and were not properly cared for. They were found on at least three other occasions in three other towns wandering around together. Surprisingly, they had no licenses and were not microchipped. When the animal control officer for that town went out to retrieve the dogs, Sunny, an Akita, would not leave Sheldon's side and did not want to be separated from him, so she was immediately thought to be a bit of a "difficult" dog. We have since discovered that Sunny is not difficult at all …… she just wants her little friend by her side.
Sunny is about 3 to 4 years old and Sheldon, the little Shar Pei mix, is about two years old, and two more bonded dogs would be hard to find. They were separated at first to be given a medical check-up by our veterinarian and then be logged in to our system and when they were reunited in the very short space of an hour, you would think they had not seen each other in years. Sunny ran to Sheldon to look him over, and began cleaning him up and mothering him. Sheldon soaked up the attention from Sunny and leaned against her while she made sure he was okay. We feel that there is some relation between the two because although Sunny is an Akita, she has the very distinctive shar pei nose. If she is not Sheldon's mother, she should be. When the pair were out being walked together one day and Sunny was busy sniffing some trees, she turned around to see that Sheldon had gotten far ahead of her and she practically took off running to get to him. Sheldon whimpered with delight when he saw Sunny running towards him and did a full body wiggle as she approached. Yes, these two are quite bonded and although it may take a little longer to find them a home, we are determined to find them a home where they can stay together forever.
As pairs arrive -- either as surrenders or strays -- we observe their need to be a part of the other's world. The length of stay at our facility may take a little longer but we believe of the importance to keep pairs together -- it is a soothing balm for each other's heart. We hope you will help us by making a donation to cover the added expense of keeping pairs together until adopted.
They are currently available for adoption and would transition easily into any great home. Although they came from obviously neglectful circumstances, they are both very well behaved and well socialized dogs. Sheldon walks perfectly on a leash and although Sunny is very strong, she is well mannered also. Sheldon loves everyone he meets and makes friends easily. Sunny is a bit aloof, as most Akitas are, but once she gets to know you, she bonds with you quickly and will lean against you for some attention. Both seem to like other dogs and would brighten the lives of any great family that would be willing to open their hearts and home to this delightful duo. Please come in and meet them and give Sunny and Sheldon the fresh start in life that they deserve.
