When will people begin taking responsibility for their pets?? If you can't care for your pet, please turn it in long before they get in this dreadful condition. This is the latest case of neglect to be surrendered to our AHS Newark facility.
This is poor Dutchess, a one year old, unspayed ShihTzu (we think) who was surrendered today in this unimaginable condition by her owner. Seems she could no longer care for her which is obvious. However, once we shaved her down, we were horrified to see what was underneath her matted coat. There were several sores on her legs that had become badly infected bordering on gangrene. Dutchess is in our medical department where our vet staff is concentrating on treating her legs and we are hoping for the best. This is something we are sad to say … we see several times a month. Dutchess' case will be reported to the SPCA for investigation and, hopefully, charges will be filed against the owner. We will update her condition as we learn more.
She is only about a year old and in need of a lifetime of love and care. Thanks to the Res-Q Fund we have help with the medical care needed for Dutchess as well as the huge numbers of sick and injured animals that have recently come through our doors. Your donation makes a difference.
The veterinary staff has verified that there is extreme urine scalding, rashes and sores and after proper medication and treatment, will be available for adoption in about 2 weeks. After her treatment, she will get a more "finished" grooming. Our groomer was out when Dutchess came in and it was imperative that the hair be removed immediately; hence the "chop" job.

UPDATE: March 3, Dutchess shaved down.
