Mikey - Rescued Stray with Severely Injured Eye

When the sad picture of this lost and injured pup was posted on the internet, we knew we just had to help this helpless boy. Mikey was a stray that was brought in to a very overcrowded shelter in New York. If he were just a typical healthy stray dog, his fate would still be a bit bleak after his 3 day hold was up and he was not reclaimed, but Mikey was more unfortunate than most.

He came in to the shelter with a severe injury to his right eye. His cornea had ruptured and he has become blind in the eye because of the injury. It can be difficult for most mix breed dogs to get adopted in the city, where there are just too many dogs and not enough homes, but since Mikey had a disadvantage due to his injury, it seemed impossible that he would make it out alive. We decided we had to give this lovely young boy a chance.

Mikey is only about a year old, and is a Stafforshire terrier/pharaoh hound mix. He literally could not be any sweeter if he tried. Mikey came bopping off of the van and after taking only a sniff or two of us, he decided that he loved us, and had found some new best friends. Mikey just adores people and we can't imagine how he came to be in the state that he is in now, but we are just thrilled that he will get the help that he needs in order for him to live a full, happy life. He does not let his injury or lack of vision in one eye affect his loving personality in any way, and his rear end has not stopped wiggling since he arrived. Once Mikey is all healed up and ready to go, he will make some great family very happy when he wins them over with his warm and bubbly personality.

Since Mikey did not get the medical treatment that he needed immediately following his injury, the eye is too far gone to be saved now. Mikey will need to have his eye enucleated, and then will need a couple of weeks to heal from surgery. After that, he will begin interviewing potential new families.

Mikey, and all of us here at Associated Humane Societies, are so grateful for wonderful people like you that recognize the good work that we do in saving animals like Mikey every day. Without your support, we could not do what we do. Please make a contribution toward Mikey's care, and donate to our Res-Q Fund, and please stay tuned for more from our new friend Mikey.

The young Staffordshire Terrier is at Popcorn Park until he is ready for a lifetime commitment of love. You will be able to see his progress with updates here on our website or log onto the Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter Facebook. For more information, e-mail us.

Won't you show Mikey your love this Valentine's Day?
